Time And The Conways

Theatre Reviews by Phyl Romeril for Guardian and Gazette Newspapers
Spotlight – Time Piece

The timeless appeal of Time and the Conways, one of Priestley's best plays, was felt again when Wadham Players were at Holy Trinity Church Hall, Hermon Hill.

They maintained a healthy standard throughout, and all the characters of this family saga captured the imagination.

Gerri Watts as Mother was charming and vivacious with an undercurrent of selfishness. Keith Cummings, the shy son Alan, probably the only happy member of the family, was at ease with his character and June Gray's radical Hazel came across with forceful clarity.

The other daughters, played by Alison Rhodes, Kathy Freeman and Ann Housden, were well contrasted - attractive, sensitive and youthfully enthusiastic.

Elaine Elliott scored nicely as the pretty, rather foolish Joan who wed Robin (John Snow), a fallen hero and mother's pet.

Alisdair Low's Ernest, a social outcast who made his way successfully up the ladder, and John Wain's sympathetic family solicitor gave an extra boost to an engrossing evening.

Michael Michael directed.
