Spring 1600 by Emlyn Williams

For the annual open-air production by Wadham Players Theatre Group

Spring 1600 by Emlyn Williams Our comedy recounts the adventures of Essex country girl Ann Byrd with the famous Shakespearian actor Richard Burbage’s theatre company ‘The Lord Chamberlain’s Men’ at a time when women were forbidden to "tread the boards". Ann disguises herself as a man in order to join the company with hilarious results. Although we cannot say that this play was the inspiration for the film ‘Shakespeare in Love’, history tells us the Bard did indeed write plays especially for Burbage!
