Phyl Romeril sees the Wadahm Players and
Redbridge Stage Company give a comedy writer an airing
Richard Harris' sexist comedy Outside Edge, centred on an
afternoon at the suburban cricket match, received a spirited
innings at Hermon Hill from the Wadham Players.
Several of the cast have yet to conquer the acoustics of
their new home but despite some problems with projection the
humorous accents of suburban snobbery were well placed, even to
a degree of satire.
Jill Atkins played Maggie with largesse - we would well
believe her assets to be brick laying and sex. Clearly
audible and with no nonsense, she squeezed the most from her
comic lines.
John Snow was the right choice to play Kevin, wimpish but
lovable: his attributes are cooking and spin bowling.
The team captain, with a single purpose in life and few
qualities of communication, was portrayed with forceful
fanaticism by Bob Gray, with Elaine Elliott his efficient but
long-suffering wife.
Other members to bat were Dennis (a hearty performance by
Keith Cummings, Bob (Alisdair Low) and Ginnie (Alison Rhodes).
As Alex, Paul Hawley did his best to place the character, and
as Sharon, Kathy Hutton had the qualificiations to portray the
disco-dancer, beautifully overdressed and awkward, almost
inarticulate with excellent timing in a difficult part.
The visual effect of the pavillion was satisfactory and the
action wasn't allowed to wane. A pity some of the meaningful
dialogue was lost on occasions.
Michael Michael directed.
